Must Have: Hydrazoid Clap On

Everyone appreciates a good Hydrazoid. Build your own with this kit from Elenco. It needs only basic tools to assemble and once done, reacts to sound impulses. Clap your hands and it will move forward for 15 seconds. LEDs and illuminated fiber optic antennas make it more than your average bot on the block. At a size of 7 x 6 x 5", don't forget 2 AA batteries (not included.)

Must Have: Mattel Screature

While your wimpy friends are busy with their Pleos, you can surprise and attack with your Screature. He uses IR sensors to find and get his prey while screaming in that hideous dinosaur kind of way. Pet him on the back and he will be nice, but if you touch him on the nose, he will spit water at you. The Screature needs 3 AA (included) batteries to wreak havoc and can be placed in room guard mode to protect your other bots.

Robot Snob Must Have: Mighty Beans

We remember playing with actual jumping beans as kids and finding out that they were really worms inside a cocoon trying to get out. Somehow the cheapy plastic ones back them weren't nearly as much fun. Mighty Beanz one up that concept. They can race and flip down a tilted surface. Sold in 6-packs, they are technically not robots, but we bet the next generation will be.

Must Have: Zhu Zhu Pets 2010 Toy of the Year
Even with the vague threat of too much lead in their noses, the Zhu Zhu Pets were announced overall best from the 2010 Toy of the Year Awards. Lego's Mindstorms NXT 2.0 took top honors in the Educational category and was deemed "an outstanding toy that helps children develop special skills and knowledge through play." But then, we already knew that, right?
Other awards went to Mattel's Mindflex game, Spin Master's Air Hogs Zero Gravity Laser Car and Techno Source's Rubik's TouchCube.

Must Have: The New and Improved Pleo
Pleo is back with new improvements and was shown off at the CES 2010 by his new owner, Innvo Labs. Changes include improved skin, a better paint job and a new charger. This is good news for both old and new fans who don't want the dinobot to become extinct.

Robot Snob Must Have - Tribot

We are thinking that WowWee must be getting ready to debut a new bot as they are offering their Tribot at an amazingly cheap inexpensive 79% discount. Use his remote to get him to tell lame jokes or play games. The 15" high robot has 3 wheels, making him omni directional, and has multiple activity/alarm modes, several sensors and LED indicators. He also needs 8 AA and 3 AAA batteries, not included.

Robot Snob Must Have: Roomba

We are thinking of dating things from now on as B.R. and A.R., before and after Roomba. While we get to play with lots of shiny electronic toys, this holiday we caved and purchased our own robotic vacuum. We not only got free shipping with our basic 400, we also got a pet maintenance kit. We hate to use that word "awesome" but honestly, it truly is. After its initial charge, we let it loose in our upstairs hall to make sure all was well and it purred away.

The Roomba went into the bathroom and back down the hall, then did what iRobot says will never happen. It went down all 13 stairs to the first floor. But the great god of all things electronic was watching over us as it only lost the removable bin and started up again with nary a scratch.

Watching the robobot run back and forth while we were doing other nasty chores was so endearing that we almost started talking to it. We don't even mind the noise that many complain about. There are a couple of negatives, however. If you have very furry pets you need to clean the brush often and the vacuum does not like shag carpeting. That being said, head over to iRobot and find a Roomba you can call your own.

Must Have: Insultabotz

Build the Insultabotz, load it up with one or several evil messages of up to 15 seconds apiece and let it loose in your workplace or home. When it comes in contact with any object detected by its IR eye, such as people, pets or water coolers, it will stop, reverse direction and issue an insult. The 6-legged robot is simple to assemble and is no doubt simply annoying.

Must Have - Animated Vitameatavegamin Lucy

We think that the best "I Love Lucy" episode ever was the one with her demonstrating Vitameatavegamin. She has since been immortalized with this 14" tall animated Lucy with moving head, arms, and body. Both the classic scene and a DVD of Episode 30 are included. Lucy comes with a 120V AC adapter or can run on 4 AA batteries (not included.)

Must Have - Hexbugs Take on Robotic Hamsters

Who needs a Zhu Zhu Pet ? When the original Hexbug Nanos were conceived, there were over 150 variations of legs alone tested, so you know that this robotic insect has a history. The final version allows the legs to bend and unbend allowing him to move forward. When you order, the color may vary, but you will get one that can not only flip over by itself but comes with an access code that allows you to go online and play games.
Oddly enough, your Nano can have its own Habitat beginning next month, leaving us to believe that the company really is after the robotic hamster market.

P.S. Happy Holidays, all! Remember that today is the day to give what you can to whomever you can. Greet your neighbors, feed a stray cat, love your enemies, and forgive everyone everything.

Must Have: Invest in Robots
While you are thinking about last minute holiday gifts, teach someone inexpensively how to save with the Mudpuppy Robots Money Bank. At a size of 4.5 x 4.5 x 4", it has three slots and interior compartments and has been safety tested. For older spendthrifts, there is the Diamond Select R2-D2 Bank sculpted by Oluf Hartvigson. About 11" tall, the perfectly scaled droid can save the planet, one dime at a time.
Midwest's Ceramic Bank eeps when you feed it and the ROBO Bank doubles as an alarm clock. He actually talks, counts and tells the time as his eyes flash in that evil botty kind of way.

Must Have: Transformer Watches

Our Transformer gadgets of the week (it certainly seems that often) are these watches from Transformer Kids. They don't really do much, no bells and whistles, but they certainly look menacing at an inexpensive price. Choose between Optimus and Bumblebee.
